We have already switched to 100% renewable energy and are committed to a 50% reduction in our carbon footprint by 2030.

But we will not stop there. Our drive for increased sustainability will encompass everything from the products we create, the network we build, and the way we work across our entire organisation every day. Here are some examples of how we are making a positive impact on the environment:

solar pv generation

Solar PV Generation

We have already installed solar panels on multiple sites across the country and this work continues. In 2023, our solar PV production capacity reached 600 kilowatt peak. This equates to 430 megawatt hours of electricity and a reduction of 171 tonnes of coal burned. Quite an achievement considering the lack of sun in Ireland!

2023 also saw a reduction of 203 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Which is equivalent to planting 331 trees.

In 2024, we launched, to our knowledge, the first off grid telecoms site in Ireland at Carty’s Lane. At this hilltop site in the Dublin Mountains, we have installed solar PV panels and battery storage. The solar panels power the site and charge the battery during the day, with the battery taking over to provide power at night.

We’re proud of what we have achieved so far, but we know there is much further to go and will continue to drive forward with our contribution to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Six show set

The Albert Initiative

Established by BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) in 2011, The Albert Initiative supports the global film and television industry to reduce the environmental impact of production, and to create content that supports a vision for a sustainable future

As a key stakeholder member of the Screen Greening Coalition, Virgin Media Television have been championing the Albert Initiative in Ireland for a number of years and we are the first broadcaster in Ireland to mandate certification as a compulsory deliverable on all our commissions in 2021.

Since the establishment of The Albert Initiative, we've had 38 series and short films certified, with another 14 currently in production and registered with Albert to be certified.

But that’s not all ... The Six O’Clock Show was the first studio-based television show to be awarded Albert certification in Ireland, and was the first show in Ireland to have a fully sustainably-built studio set; with Ireland AM following shortly after.
